Our View

Our View will ensure that deaf and disabled people are at the heart of Accentuate, steering the programme and contributing valuable expertise.  We have recently had our first meeting with the Our View Core Group, who will act as advisors to Accentuate and Ambassadors for the programme.  We wanted to take this opportunity to introduce them to you.  They have written blogs on the Our View page of the Accentuate website, which makes for really interesting reading and will be an ongoing feature, so please do check out the Our View section of the website.  In the meantime the Our View Core Advisory Team are:

Jon Adams– Jon is a visual artist with strong exhibition history. In 2006 and 2007 he won art plus awards for his work. He is a geologist by training and was a book illustrator for 25 years. His work revolves around response to space and place, using generative sound, drawing, word, graphic and subtle intervention.  He has work in the permanent collections of Pallant House Gallery, Shape Arts London, Arts Council England, and University of Portsmouth. He is a Regional Council Member for Arts Council England, South East and is currently a Research Fellow with the school of Architecture at The University of Portsmouth.

Jamie Beddard– Jamie’s two passions are the arts and sports.  He has 15 years experience of the arts both as a creative practitioner and perhaps with more relevance to this role, providing consultancy, training and governance for a host of organisations both in the mainstream and disability sectors.  He has been the Diversity Officer at Arts Council England, a Director with Graeae Theatre Company and his acting roles have included working with BBC Wales, Channel 4, Carlton TV, and various film companies.   Alongside Acting and Directing Jamie is a writer and has written for Soho Theatre, Graeae and Paines Plough.

Colin Hambrook– Colin has a background within the visual arts and writing.  He has worked with Arts Council, Dada South, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, London Disability Arts Forum and Channel 4 as a freelance researcher and copy editor. Colin is now Editor and Manager of Disability Arts Online, (DAO) which is a thriving online publication and has an International readership of 6500 people.  DAO has also pioneered ways of engaging social networks to encourage readership.

Sarah Playforth– Sarah has been committed all her life to equality of opportunity for all and has particularly focussed on this for deaf and disabled people, first in her career in public library services, for which she received an award from the library association and subsequently as a self employed trainer and consultant.  Sarah is an access, diversity and equality consultant and trainer, and a lay member for employment tribunals. She has over 30 years experience in public library and local government middle and senior management.

Kristina Veasey– Kristina has experience in participation and consultation work with children and young people (many with complex needs and multiple impairments) which has encouraged her to think outside the box and look creatively at how to break down barriers.  Kristina was previously a Paralympic Wheelchair Basketball Player and the Amnesty International  Paralympic Ambassador, during which time she had articles published in the Guardian Online Newspaper and referred to in the Independent online newspaper.  Kristina worked as a Disability awareness worker with East Sussex Youth Development Service before becoming a freelance consultant. In 2004 Kristina was awarded BBC South East Sports Personality of the Year.
