Tom Shakespeare Animation Launches To Mark National Paralympic Day

Ahead of the International Paralympic Day on Saturday 7th September, Accentuate will be marking this event by launching two new commentaries exploring the cultural legacy for Deaf and disabled people one year on from the Paralympic Games.  Accentuate commissioned Dr Tom Shakespeare to provide a short insight into what he felt the highs and lows had been over the last year and the challenges and opportunities which lie ahead.  “Raising the Game” has been transcribed into a beautiful short animation by internationally renowned animators, Cognitive Media.  We will be launching this animation today via youtube with an ambition to create a viral campaign highlighting the issues Deaf and disabled people are facing today – So please be part of the mission of raising the profile and follow the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjm8dn5X0Xc

On 5th July Accentuate partnered with The University of Brighton to bring together leaders within the cultural sector to discuss "One year on from the Paralympic Games – what is the positive legacy for the Cultural Sector and what are the challenges and opportunities ahead of us?"  This event was live streamed and is still available to watch via http://www.accentuatesymposium.public-i.tv

Accentuate also commissioned Demos, Britain’s leading cross-party think-tank, to attend the Symposium and produce a report documenting the thoughts, comments and actions from the day alongside highlighting other initiatives evaluating the legacy for Deaf and disabled people one year on from the Games.  Accentuate is launching this report next week, along with our key recommendations which we hope will inspire individuals and organisations working in the cultural sector to continue to strive to promote opportunities and access for Deaf and disabled people.  You will be able to read this report on our website over the coming days.

Finally we are delighted that Rachel Gadsden, who was originally commissioned by Accentuate to lead the exceptional  outdoor performance piece, Starting Line, has continued to develop an International reputation and will be performing as part of the Liberty Festival celebrations on Saturday at the Olympic Park.  Rachel will also be working again with Artistic Director Ryan Laight, who was part of the highly successful creative team which produced Starting Line which was performed as part of the Paralympic Torch celebrations a year ago.  Rachel also spoke at our Symposium and is one of the notable positive examples that the Paraylmpic Legacy is continuing, although we still have much to do to ensure more Deaf and disabled people have a visible role in the cultural life of the UK.

Accentuate has been funded by Legacy Trust UK, creating a lasting impact from London 2012 by funding ideas and local talent to inspire creativity across the UK.
