The Accentuate Symposium
Friday 5th July 2013
Sallis Benney Theatre, University of Brighton

Would you like an opportunity to learn about accessible event organisation, take part in free access and equality training and help be part of creating an accessible and warm welcome for some of the leading cultural and disability organisations?  Then this volunteering opportunity is for you.


Requirements

Responsibilities will include registering of guests on the day, helping with seating and to assist people throughout the event with directions to facilities, with regards to the scheduled events and with any access requirements i.e. assisting someone with visual impairments.

All volunteers will receive a free equality and access training session as part of their participation. This will take place prior to the event day.

Provisionally this training session will take place on Wednesday 03 July 2013 in Brighton.

Volunteer timings: 12pm – 8pm
Event timings: 12.30pm – 7.30pm.

  • Registration 12.30pm
  • Doors open 1pm
  • Event starts 1.30pm
  • Event closes 6.30pm
  • Drinks and networking until 7.30pm

Refreshments and nibbles available, breaks will be given.

Event Accessibility: We will have British Sign Language (BSL) Interpreters and palantypists at our event.

The symposium will be discussing what the cultural legacy is one year on from the Paralympic Games. Keynote speakers sparking the day of debates include Rosie Sherrington (Social Inclusion and Diversity Advisor at English Heritage), Vidar Hjardeng MBE (broadcast journalist, honoured for services to visually impaired people), Jonathan Banks (Chief Executive of Public Art Think Tank – Ixia), Professor Nick Watson (Strathclyde Centre for Disability Research) Rachel Gadsden Artist and Carole McFadden (Drama & Dance Adviser for East Asia, China & Hong Kong, Middle East and North Africa, British Council). There will also be the premiere of a new animated short lecture by Dr Tom Shakespeare.
