Hidden Battles was a partnership between English Heritage and the Dada-South Go Make! Programme. It was designed as a pilot project for Creative Landscapes.

Artist Caroline Cardus was commissioned to run a participatory residency at Fort Brockhurst, Gosport, that worked with disabled people to explore the everyday battles and barriers that they faced. Fort Brockhurst – a 19th century defensive fort – threw up its own barriers and was in this sense a perfect place for the project to work.

Models created by Caroline and participants were shown at the Fort for Heritage Open Days 2008, and this was complemented by a soundtrack that echoed eerily through the tight corridors of The Keep. Caroline ran extra workshops during the event, creating additional models to add to the collection and allowing visitors to find out more about the residency

The shadows and the phobias and the worries the models depict are eerily relevant to all, regardless of disability. Splendid. Comment in the Hidden Battles Visitors Book
