Project Artworks site specific interaction at Fort Brockhurst, Gosport

Accentuate is currently developing a groundbreaking Public Art initiative entitled Accentuate Space, for deaf and disabled artists interested in making new work in response to sites of historic importance to disabled people. This unique initiative will contribute to the wider arts ecology nationally and internationally, through partnerships with leading contemporary public art commissioners and curators and high profile art galleries in site specific locations.  Currently there is no programme of this sort which will incubate new sophisticated work made by disabled artists, in the context of site specific interactions in places of historic importance to disabled people.

We are proposing that there will be a range of commissions, from small research and development grants for emerging artists, through to larger scale commissions with high levels of public engagement.  Accentuate Space will provide a highly ambitious opportunity for artists to develop their contemporary practice, increase their public profile and engage with wide ranging audiences from both the arts and heritage arenas.

Accentuate also intends to deliver a mentoring programme alongside the commissions for both early career and established practitioners, ensuring a more vibrant, sustainable and resilient community of disabled creative practitioners is established.  Through the exploration of site specific historic material, disabled artists and audiences will unearth the hidden histories of spaces through visual arts, sound and digital interactions.  Non-disabled audiences will have preconceptions challenged and the cultural life of the UK will be enriched.
